Belgium boasts a lengthy and proud history of participation in international volleyball, but last year was the Red Dragons' World League debut. Belgium's international volleyball history dates back to the 1948 European Championship when the team finished 5th, which is its best placement so far. In 2013 Belgium finished 7th. In 2013 it won the European League title in impressive fashion for the first time. The triumph underlined Belgium's status as an up-and-coming contender on the European scene under coach Dominique Baeyens. Belgium enjoyed a solitary trip to the Olympic Games in Mexico City in 1968. Last year, at its first World Championship outing since 1978, Belgium placed 17th. It is now ranked #21 in the world and #10 in Europe.
