In 2015 France shocked the volleyball world as it emerged from Group 2 of the World League to progress all the way to a historic gold medal. At the 2014 World Championship it finished at the prestigious 4th place. In 2013 France ended up fifth at the European Championship. France's volleyball history dates back to the 1948 European Championship, where it took silver, before adding three more silver and two bronze medals in the history of the competition. More recently, France finished 2nd in the 2006 World League and 2nd at EuroVolley 2009. The team failed to qualify for the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Olympic Games. France is in a new era under head coach Laurent Tillie, one of the most decorated players in the national team's history, and the objective now is to end this 12-year absence from the Olympics. It is now ranked #12 in the world and #7 in Europe.
