Poland is the reigning world champion. It won the 2014 World Championship at home after a 1974 gold from Mexico and a 2006 silver from Japan. Poland boasts a long and vibrant volleyball tradition, having played an important role in the sport's development since its appearance at the inaugural World Championship in 1949. The Poles dominated the international scene in the mid-1970s and became Olympic gold medalists at Montreal 1976. Their World Cup silver medals from 1965 and 2011 were followed up by a bronze just days before the start of the 2015 CEV Volleyball European Championship finals. From the World League, Poland won gold in 2012 and bronze in 2011, finishing 4th in 2015. It won the 2009 European Championship title. Its overall record in the competition also includes 5 silver and 2 bronze medals. In 2013 Poland failed to impress at home, finishing 9th. The country’s medal count also boasts a 2015 European League bronze. It is now ranked #3 in the world and #3 in Europe.
