Reigning Olympic and European champion Russia is unquestionably a volleyball super power and, as a successor of the USSR, boasts a long tradition of success. The team’s first European Championship gold as Russia came in 2013 following 3 silver and 3 bronze medals. However, the Soviet Union won the EuroVolley gold a record 12 times, also claiming two bronze medals to become the most decorated team in the history of the competition. The USSR and Russia combined have an impressive record of 4 Olympic titles (1964, 1968, 1980 and 2012), 6 World Championship titles, 6 World Cups, 3 World League and 1 European League gold medals, as well as numerous silver and bronze medals from these and other prestigious competitions. Most recently, Russia took bronze from the inaugural Baku 2015 European Games and finished fourth in the 2015 World Cup. It is now ranked #2 in the world and #1 in Europe.
